Cetinje

Cetinje, once the capital of Montenegro, is known as the city of honour, courage, and loyalty, and it is still regarded as the cultural and spiritual heart of the country.
Cetinje

The town, which was founded in 1482 at the foot of the Lovćen mountain, was named after the Cetina River, which flows through the valley. Cetinje is now the country's historical and cultural centre and home to numerous museums and historical monuments, as well as the President's residence and numerous other attractions.

The Vlach church, built in 1405, is the oldest landmark. There are ancient Greek frescoes here, and the church fence is made of 2,000 trophy rifles captured during battles with the Turks. The Palace of King Nicholas is an important historical monument that has been converted into a museum with works of archaeological, historical, and ethnographic importance, as well as a collection of awards, weapons, military clothing, flags, and paintings. The Billiard Palace, the former residence of Peter II Petrović Njegoš, was built in 1838 and now houses a collection of compositions written by a famous Montenegrin ruler and poet. You can also see his personal belongings, books, and weapons.

The main attraction of the city is the Cetinje Monastery. Built in 1483, it used to be the seat of Montenegrin Prince-bishops. The right hand of John the Baptist is kept here. Cetinje, as it has always been, remains Montenegro's religious centre. The mausoleum in Lovćen is also not to be missed! It is located at an altitude of 1660 m above sea level, 15 km away from Cetinje. The most famous Montenegrin Prince-bishop, Petar II Petrović Njegoš, rests there. The mausoleum is the work of famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović, and it has a fantastic view that makes the trip worthwhile.
For history and tradition lovers, there is no better place to visit than Cetinje, a place very important to Montenegrins without which Montenegro would not be what it is today. This historic city, located halfway between Podgorica and Budva, is also known as the soul of Montenegro.
